Connect Four is one of the most elegant strategy games ever invented. Two players take turns dropping discs into a seven-column grid, and the first to line up four of their own discs — horizontally, vertically or diagonally — takes the round. Ten seconds to learn, a lifetime to master.
This RetroPlayNow version pits you against a built-in AI opponent that thinks several moves ahead. The machine looks for its own winning lines, blocks yours, and favors the center of the board where the best lines are born. It is smart enough to challenge you, but human enough to beat: a solid trap will make it pay.
A match is a best-of-3 series: the first player to win 2 rounds takes the match. Each round you win scores 200 points, a draw is worth 50, and your final series score is submitted to the RetroPlayNow leaderboard.
The strategy lives in the details. The center columns control the board: a disc in the middle can become a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line, while the edges can only work in two directions. Set up double threats — two places where a four-in-a-row is one move away — and the AI cannot defend both.
When the series ends, your score converts to Retro Coins at 100 points per coin, so every clever trap you set pays twice: once on the board, once in your arcade wallet.
How to play Connect Four
- Drop a disc. Click or tap a column to drop your red disc into the lowest free slot. Discs stack from the bottom up.
- Line up four to win the round. Connect four of your discs horizontally, vertically or diagonally before the AI does. The winning line is highlighted.
- Control the center. The middle columns create the most winning lines. Occupy them early and build your traps from there.
- Set double threats. A position with two open four-in-a-row chances cannot be defended by the AI. Build traps instead of single lines.
- Win the best-of-3 series. Each round you win is worth 200 points (draws 50). First to 2 round wins takes the match and the score converts to Retro Coins.
