Chess — the ultimate strategy game for 1500 years — comes to RetroPlayNow in a clean, fast 8×8 edition. You play White, the AI plays Black. Move your pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, queen and king by the classic rules, castle not included for simplicity, pawns promote to queen, and the goal is checkmate.
Our engine generates all legal moves, filters out any that leave your king in check, detects check, checkmate and stalemate, and lets the AI think 2 to 4 moves ahead depending on difficulty. Tap a piece to see its legal dots, tap a destination to move, get a hint that flashes the best defensive move, or undo a blunder. Captured pieces are shown, the last move is highlighted, and the king glows red when in check.
Every win is scored for Retro Coins — faster checkmates with fewer undos mean a higher score and a higher best saved on this device. No clock pressure, no setup — just pure, timeless chess with endless fresh battles.
How to play Chess
- Move by the rules. Pawns forward 1 (2 from start, capture diagonal), knights L, bishops diagonal, rooks orthogonal, queen both, king 1 square. Pawns promote to queen on the last rank.
- Stay out of check. You cannot leave your king in check. Illegal moves are hidden. If your king is in check you must move or block.
- Checkmate to win. Trap the enemy king so it has no legal moves while in check. Stalemate (no moves but not in check) is a draw.
- Use hints and undo. Tap Hint to flash the best move, Undo to step back one ply. Both help you learn.
- Score higher. Checkmate faster with fewer undos/hints for a higher score and more Retro Coins. Best is saved.

How do you play Chess?
White moves first. Move pieces by their rules, capture by landing on an enemy piece, and checkmate the enemy king (attack it with no legal escape).
What is check and checkmate?
Check means your king is attacked and must move or block. Checkmate is check with no legal moves — you win. Stalemate is no moves but not in check — draw.
Do pawns promote?
Yes — a pawn reaching the far rank automatically promotes to queen, the strongest piece.
What are the difficulty levels?
Easy looks 2 moves ahead, Medium 3 and Hard 4. Harder AI defends better and finds forks and pins.
Can I play on mobile?
Yes — tap a piece then a dotted destination. Works perfectly on phones and tablets.
