Q*bert is the iconic 1982 Gottlieb arcade game that brought isometric gameplay to the masses. You control a strange orange character hopping across a pyramid of cubes, changing each cube's color simply by landing on it.
The goal is simple: change every cube to the target color. But the execution is anything but. You can only hop diagonally down the pyramid — not up, not sideways. Every hop takes you closer to the edge, and one misstep means falling to your death.
To make matters worse, enemies populate the pyramid. Red balls hop down relentlessly. Coily, a purple snake, actively pursues you. Later levels add green snakes that can revert cubes you've already colored, and Ugg and Slick, strange creatures that appear on the sides.
Our RetroPlayNow version captures the distinctive isometric look and feel of the original, with smooth hopping animation, multiple enemy types, and escalating difficulty. Every cube changed earns Retro Coins.
How to play Q*bert
- Hop diagonally down. Move in diagonal directions to hop down the pyramid. You cannot hop up or sideways.
- Change cube colors. Land on a cube to change its color. Change all cubes to the target color to clear the level.
- Avoid enemies. Red balls and Coily the snake pursue you. Jump over them or use safe zones to escape.
- Don't fall off. Hopping off the edge of the pyramid ends the game. Be careful near the bottom.
- Earn Retro Coins. Change cubes and clear levels for points. More points mean more Retro Coins.
