Dig Dug is the inventive 1982 Namco action game that turned the act of digging into an art form. You control Taizo Hori, a lone digger tunneling through the earth to rid it of two types of enemies: the round Pookas and the fire-breathing Fygars.
Your tools are your shovel and your air pump. Dig through the brown earth to create tunnels, then pump air into enemies to inflate them until they pop. A partially inflated enemy is frozen in place, buying you time to plan your next move. But pump them too much and they explode — four pumps for a Pookas, five for a Fygar.
The enemies can turn into ghosts and pass through solid earth to pursue you, so you must always be aware of their positions. The Fygars add extra danger with their fire breath, which can reach you through tunnels. Vegetables occasionally appear in the center of the stage for bonus points.

How to play Dig Dug
- Dig tunnels. Move in any direction to dig through the brown earth. Create paths to reach enemies.
- Pump enemies. Face an enemy and press fire to pump air into them. Four pumps pops a Pookas, five pops a Fygar.
- Avoid ghosts. Enemies can turn into ghosts and pass through earth. Always be aware of their positions.
- Watch for fire. Fygars breathe fire that can reach you through tunnels. Don't get cornered.
- Earn Retro Coins. Pop enemies and collect vegetables for points. More points mean more Retro Coins.
